Day 8: Departure from Balestrand

We left Balestrand with the ferry that had dropped us off from Bergen. There are only two ferry-boats a day.

The crossing Balestrand-Flåm is quite short: Hardly an hour and a half.

Flåm does not have the same charm as Balestrand and is way less authentic. Landed at a private wharf, we found ourselves engulfed in an impressive stream of tourists. On the waterfront, huge gift shops and cafés or restaurants are standing next to one another, whilst the village only counts 350 inhabitants.

In the middle of all these buildings, you will find a little tourist office inside the train station and the Railway museum (that is free).

There are washrooms at the train station. On the other hand, the luggage storage is not free.

Most tourists go to Flåm because it is the departure point of the famous rail link Flåm-Myrdal, also known as Flåmsbana. The 20-kilometre journey lasts about an hour and goes through 20 different tunnels (among which 18 were hand-dug). There is no road to connect the two towns. The other option would be either on foot or by bike. Yet again, the scenery is wonderful: We can see rivers making their way through deep gullies, dwellings clinging to steep mountainside… Besides, the train literally stops and the passengers are allowed to step out in order to admire the 225-metre high Kjosfossen waterfall: Astounding!

At Myrdal train station, there is a rail link to Oslo or Bergen.
